What will happen to the United States in the days ahead? Are there biblical prophecies about America? Why does the U.S. seem absent in the pages of the Bible? How can it be that our country, once the wealthiest, most evangelistic, most generous, and most powerful nation in all of history, plays no discernible role in the dominant prophetic events of this age?

The Eagle of Revelation 12?

Teachers of this concept point out that the eagle is a conspicuous symbol of the United States. The problem is that the eagle was also a symbol of the Roman Empire. In fact many nations have used the eagle as a national symbol, including Austria, Palestine, Russia, Syria, and at least twenty-five other countries.

Isaiah 5:20

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who exchange darkness for light, and light for darkness; who exchange bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!

The biggest tragedy has been that many pulpits in America are silent about what is happening to our nation. “Don’t judge,” the pastors say. “Don’t talk about sin or hell. Don’t make people uncomfortable.” Those are the rules of the day for many preachers. Yet the Church possesses the only hope for our nation. People don’t appreciate the light until the darkness or sin and bondage is exposed and explained.

The United States—a Merchant of Tarshish?

Some of the best prophecy scholars teach that the United States is one of the “merchants of Tarshish” listed in Ezekiel 38:13.
Sheba and Dedan and the merchants of Tarshish with all its villages shall say to you, “Have you come to take spoil? Have you gathered your company to seize prey, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great spoil?”

Historians suggest that Tarshish was located in either Great Britain or Spain, and the United States by extension is one of her merchants (or “young lions” in the King James Version). So, the United States may be here in Ezekiel 38, but she apparently remains passive or unable to do anything when Russia aligns with the Muslim nations to invade Israel.

The New Babylon?

Another frequently-mentioned idea is that the United States is “Babylon” or “Mystery Babylon.” In Revelation 17 we find “Mystery Babylon,” and in Revelation 18, we find the city “Babylon.”  John wrote:

Revelation 17:1-2

One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me, saying to me, “Come, I will show you the judgment of the great prostitute who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed adultery, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her sexual immorality.

Revelation 17:5

On her forehead a name was written: MYSTERY, BABYLON THE GREAT, THE MOTHER OF PROSTITUTES AND OF THE ABOMINATIONS OF THE EARTH

Most scholars and students of Bible prophecy, myself included, understand “mystery Babylon” to be a syncretistic conglomeration of religions that forms in the last days. This religious juggernaut will be instrumental in supporting the coming world leader’s policies. Literal Babylon may be rebuilt, but the Babylon which is named in the Revelation 18 is most likely a symbolic term for the coming world empire’s capital city of the final world leader, the antichrist.

What You Can Do

Now is a very good time to fast and pray for America and her leaders. Every time people humbled themselves in fasting and prayer—without exception, God did something unusual and extraordinary. Even wicked King Ahab, a man sold out to the devil at a deep level, averted judgment when he humbled himself with fasting.

If believers, the Church of Jesus Christ, would take their positions as His ambassadors on Earth, with the help of the Holy Spirit, we would win millions to Jesus Christ before His coming.
