Words are among the most powerful gifts God has entrusted to us. Through words, relationships are built, faith is strengthened, vision is cast, and lives are transformed.
Proverbs 18:21
Death and life are in the power of the tongue
Every conversation, meeting, lesson, sermon, or presentation carries the potential to either encourage and inspire or discourage and diminish. Whether you speak to one person or one thousand, your words matter.
Jesus understood the importance of communication. Crowds gathered to hear Him because He taught with authority, clarity, and compassion. He didn’t simply deliver information—He imparted truth that changed hearts. His words brought hope to the broken, courage to the fearful, and direction to those searching for purpose. Even His stories, drawn from everyday life, carried eternal significance. Jesus knew that truth communicated well is truth remembered.
Preparation Honors God
2 Timothy 2:15, KJV
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth
Effective communication rarely happens by accident. Preparation honors both the message and the people who will hear it. The Holy Spirit empowers us, but He also expects us to be diligent students, continually growing in wisdom and skill.
Proverbs 15:28, KJV
The heart of the righteous studieth to answer: but the mouth of the wicked poureth out evil things
Notice that the righteous person studies before speaking. Thoughtful communicators don’t merely react; they reflect, prepare, and choose words that build others up. Excellence in communication isn’t about drawing attention to ourselves—it’s about making God’s truth clear, compelling, and unforgettable.
Developing the Gift
A violin in the hands of a beginner may produce little more than squeaks and noise. Place that same instrument in the hands of a skilled musician, however, and it can move an audience to laughter, tears, or standing applause. The instrument didn’t change—the person using it did. In much the same way, God has placed a voice within each of us. As we submit that voice to Him, develop our gifts, and learn to communicate with excellence, He can use ordinary words to accomplish extraordinary things.
Perhaps God has placed a message in your heart. Maybe you’ve sensed a call to teach, preach, lead, coach, or encourage others, but you’ve wondered if you’re capable. If God has called you, He will also equip you. As you commit yourself to learning, practicing, and growing, your confidence will increase, your communication will improve, and your influence will expand.
A Lasting Legacy
Never underestimate what God can do through a prepared communicator whose heart is fully surrendered to Him. One message can redirect a life. One lesson can restore a family. One conversation can awaken faith. Long after our voices fall silent, the truth we’ve faithfully spoken can continue bearing fruit in the hearts of those who heard it.
Prepare diligently. Speak wisely. Depend completely upon the Holy Spirit. Then trust God to take your words farther than you ever could on your own.
